21 Dec Signed launch agreement between JAMSS and ICE Cubes Service – first Asian commercial customer
Japan Manned Space Systems Co., Ltd. (JAMSS) has signed a launch contract with ICE Cubes service by the Belgian company Space Applications Services NV/SA. The signed agreement by JAMSS represents the first commercial Asian customer for the ICE Cubes service which provides global commercial access to the International Space Station (ISS).
JAMSS and ICE Cubes share the mission to increase the demand for commercial space business in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Using the space environment, JAMSS is proceeding with the demonstration of the “space manufacturing model” project to produce and provide high-quality products that cannot be realized on the ground, and this launch contract with ICE Cubes is the first demonstration.
JAMSS hardware to be launched to ISS in Q4 of 2019 is a cubic size unit of 10 cm equipped with samples and is planned to be accommodated in the ICE Cubes Facility onboard ISS. In addition to technical demonstration of the equipment, JAMSS will demonstrate the business scheme of the “space manufacturing model” as a whole and aims to realize a LEO service that is easy to use for customers. JAMSS plans to have the first space manufacturing service by a Japanese private company operational by 2020.
About ICE Cubes Service: the company Space Applications Services was established in 1987 and has over 30 years’ experience in space operations such as manned space activities, unmanned exploration, earth observation and so on. This heritage has been bundled together in the initiative of a commercial space access service called International Commercial Experiments service or ICE Cubes service in short.
